Abigail

“Abigail”
40cm x 50cm (16″ x 20″) Oil on W&N canvas texture paper 300gsm.
This is both the last painting in the mini-series and the new one after a long hiatus in painting.
As all others, this portrait is for sale. It was almost finished for six  months at least in the fear I didn’t know how to paint any longer. One day last week I did her remaining left arm and hand in about 15 minutes and signed it off. I can’t tell if in fact this arm is any better or worse painted than the rest of her, but I did wonder why couldn’t I finish it before… there is artists for you!

Marcus from Egypt

“Marcus from Egypt”
40cm x 50cm (16″ x 20″) Oil on W&N canvas texture paper 300gsm.
It had been a while since I painted a black face. Notwithstanding time I loved it as much as the first time. For some reason I find black skin so much richer in color and intensity that it become a constant discovery to portray likeness and depth of expression in one place.
Pure color never ends and thanks to people like Marcus I love painting!!

Boy painting for Marina

“Boy painting for Marina”
40cm x 50cm (16″ x 20″) Oil on W&N canvas texture paper 300gsm.
This is a painting I did for , one of my students as part of the art class.
I do the first portrait, we share the second one, by me doing the difficult bits and the student the easier. Finally the student will do the third and I only intervene as necessary.
This is the stage that can take either a short or a long time, depending on the person. My goal is to see a degree of autonomy in the student. This may or may not include a personal style showing yet, rather a base upon which he/she can grow further. Guidance is still necessary but that varies with the individual too.

Toddler Study 2017

“Toddler study”
40cm x 50cm (16″ x 20″) Oil on W&N canvas texture paper 300gsm.
As part of my objective to,

  1. Gain back the time spent without painting, and
  2. Create a ready to show portfolio of works to use as a guideline
  3. Not use storage space, therefore a canvas pad became ideal.

Trevi. Right Triton

TrevyTripRS36 x 24 (91.5cm x 61.0cm) Oil on canvas board.

Right side of a triptic set on the Trevi Fountain at Rome.

Phil Carrero.

The design of the trevi fountain is based on three architectural elements: a façade made of travertine; statues of carrara marble.

Neptune his carried on his tryumphal charriot by two horses jockeid by two Tritons. One horse is restless, one is calm. One triton is strong and young, one is older and holds a twisted shell that is using to announce their passage.

Ocean is also standing in the median portion of a tryumphal arch.

In the left part of the arch there is the statue of Abundance holding the horn of plenty. At her feet a toppled vase lies by a source of water. Above her there is a relief showing Agrippa commanding his generals to build the acqueduct.

Trevi, Neptune Rules

Neptune rules_med36 x 24 (91.5cm x 61.0cm) Oil on canvas board.

Centerpiece of a triptic set on the Trevi Fountain at Rome.

Phil Carrero

In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked Gian Lorenzo Bernini to sketch possible renovations, but the project was abandoned when the pope died. The planning for a new fountain on the site began again 100 years later. This time under the Roman architect Nicola Salvi, whose work was inspired by the sketches left by Bernini. The fountain took 30 years to finish and it stood completed in year 1762.

The Trevi Fountain is dominated by a several large statues. The very center of the fountain is dominated by a man standing in a large shell chariot. This statue depicts the Roman god of the water and the seas, Neptune – also known as Poseidon in Greek mythology. The chariot is pulled by two sea horses. One of them is calm and submissive while the other one is impatient and restless. The creature’s different temper is said to symbolize the fluctuating moods of the sea.

Each one of the horses is guided by a triton – a mermaid like creature who formed the escort of marine divinities in the Greek mythology.  The creatures do not only add symbolic meaning to the fountain with the contrast in their mood and poses, but they also provide a symmetrical balance.

Cuddled In

Cuddled in20″ x 16″. Oil on canvas board, Hyde Park, Sydney. Phillip Carrero.

Lunch hour at Hyde Park, tourists and office workers everywhere. This fellow comes and in two minutes he’s fast asleep.

Two oversized right-foot sneakers, two walking sticks and a brollie, all tied up by a dozen hankies and three sets of woolies.

Not safe in those cold side streets at night so a park bench in the middle of the day seems like the better option. — at Hyde Park.

Richard And Trisha.

IMGP8846s40cm x 60cm. Portrait of Richard and Trisha Duke in the wedding limousine. Phillip Carrero.

I knew Trisha Phoon from the days of helping users of Ms Access database in the Microsoft newsgroups.

I had done another portrait of Trisha Phoon previously so I was honored to be commissioned to do this one for the happy couple.

It is a fact that some portraits are easy to paint, some not so and for no apparent reason. This one was a pleasure to do. So much so that I used their pencil versions in classes to teach how to draw many times over.

All my customers are special in their own way, but if I get them as nice as Trisha and Richard have been through the years well, I’ll be doing ok!
